An increase of 189% over the same period! India's rooftop solar mounting system volume reached 1.3GW in the first September of this year

Data:2021-12-27

According to a recent report entitled "India Rooftop Photovoltaic Market Report for the Third Quarter of 2021" by the research agency Mercom India Research, the installed capacity of rooftop solar bracket installed in India in the third quarter was 448MW, compared with the 521MW in the second quarter of 2021. This is a decrease of 14% compared to the same period last year, but an increase of 189% compared to the same period last year.

In the first nine months of 2021, the total installed capacity of rooftop solar mounting structure in India was 1.3GW, an increase of 202% compared to the same period last year.

As of the end of the third quarter of 2021, India’s cumulative installed rooftop photovoltaic capacity was 6.7GW.

In the third quarter of 2021, the Indian residential photovoltaic sector grew rapidly for two consecutive quarters, accounting for 54% of the total rooftop photovoltaic installations. Industrial and commercial and government departments followed closely behind with 44% and 2% of PV deployment.

The industrial and commercial sectors have shown continued growth in the past few quarters, but rising system costs have been a cause for concern.

Raj Prabhu, CEO of Mercom Investment Group, said, “The Indian rooftop photovoltaic market is showing signs of recovery and is returning to the level before the outbreak of the new crown. However, the reduction in the cost of solar mounting bracket and the supply of materials will seriously affect the development of the photovoltaic market. Indian states still impose some restrictions on the installation of rooftop photovoltaics, which poses challenges for new developments."

The Ministry of Electricity of India has issued net metering regulations for consumers with loads up to 500kW, which has had a positive impact on rooftop photovoltaic installations. After announcing this regulation, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, Karnataka and Punjab also issued their net metering regulations with an upper limit of 500kW.

According to this survey report, some areas in India have bid for rooftop solar bracket projects over 20MW, an increase of 62% year-on-year and an increase of 125% compared to the same period last year.

The rooftop photovoltaic installed capacity tendered by the Kerala Electricity Commission accounted for 47% of the total bids announced this quarter, followed by the West Bengal Power Distribution Company, which accounted for 24%. Other companies accounted for 29% of bids in the third quarter of 2021.

Gujarat topped the list with 26% of cumulative photovoltaic installations, followed by Maharashtra and Rajasthan with 14% and 10% respectively.

Uttarakhand has the highest quarterly compound growth rate, close to 35%; followed by Maharashtra and Haryana with 31% and 29% respectively.

In the third quarter of 2021, one of the reasons why the installed capacity of rooftop solar mounting system in India has shown a downward trend is that the price of photovoltaic modules has continued to rise after the second wave of COVID-19. Prices rose 3.84% in the first quarter of 2021, 3% in the second quarter, and 2.3% in the third quarter.

The installed capacity of rooftop solar mounting structure capacity in India in the second quarter of 2021 increased by 53% from the previous month to 521MW, while the installed capacity of rooftop photovoltaic capacity in the first quarter of 2021 was 341MW.

Highlights of Mercom India Research's "India Rooftop Photovoltaic Market Report for the Third Quarter of 2021":

• In the third quarter of 2021, the installed rooftop photovoltaic capacity in India was 448MW, which was a 14% decrease from the 521MW in the second quarter of 2021. Year-on-year installations increased by 189%.

•In the first nine months of 2021, India added 1.3GW of rooftop photovoltaics, a year-on-year increase of 202%.

• As of the end of the third quarter of 2021, the cumulative installed capacity of rooftop solar mounting structure in India was 6.7GW.

• In the third quarter of 2021, rooftop photovoltaic installations in the top 10 states in India accounted for approximately 83% of the total installations.

• Gujarat State installed the most rooftop photovoltaic systems in the third quarter of 2021, followed by Maharashtra and Haryana.
